LED-81x/-850 Test fixtures for high-power LEDs
With electrical power up to several watts, high-power LEDs do not only generate high light output. The associated thermal dissipation leads to considerable warming of the LED chip and packaging, so this energy has to be properly dissipated in order to guarantee the specified LED lifetime and to avoid failure. The chip temperature also significantly affects the emitted optical power and so too the emission spectrum (color). Higher temperatures result in a reduction in the amount of light generated.
Instrument Systems has developed two ranges of test sockets for reliable operation of high-power LEDs – the LED-81x series with passive cooling and the LED-850 series with active cooling/heating via a thermoelectric cooler element. Robust contact pins enable proper electrical connection to the LEDs.
LED-81x – test socket with passive cooling
The LED-81x series of test sockets can reliably handle high-power LEDs requiring up to 5 watts of thermal dissipation. The test socket has been constructed in such a way that the generated heat is quickly transported away from the LED and into the surrounding air (fan assisted). A PT100 sensor is integrated for monitoring temperature and can be read using a compatible device. The LED-81x series test sockets have each been optimized for a particular high-power LED packaging type.
LED-850 TEC – test adapter with active cooling and heating
The LED-850 TEC test adapter allows users to determine the influence of electrical and thermal operational parameters on the optical performance of high-power LEDs. A thermoelectric cooler element (fan assisted) permits cooling or heating of the LED with an accuracy of 0.1°C. In addition, the integrated PT100 sensor as well as the thermoelectric cooler element can be hooked up to a TEC controller for setting and displaying the temperature.
